【#USTentrepreneur】Congratulations! HKUST start-up team Sootable has just received the “Climate Action Ideation Award” in the Climate Action Recognition Scheme (CARS) 2021/22.
Soot, which is also known as the “black carbon”, is the second most important man-made agent of climate change, according to the Guardian. In Hong Kong, numerous measures and policies have been made to address common greenhouse gases such as CO2, NO2, SO2, and VOCs, however, soot has always been overlooked and disposed of. In view of this, Sootable, are offering a disruptive waste-to-energy solution in combating SDG-related climate change problems and most importantly making a profound contribution to leading Hong Kong towards the goal of carbon neutrality. Sootable’s founders hope that by seriously inspecting the soot waste problem, they can include diesel vehicle owners in the green campaign and generate sustainable fuels whereas, by traditional methods, fuels like natural gas are going to deplete within 50 years.
“Sootable wishes that everyone can take part in improving the environment, no matter big or small. Also, there are many kinds of waste that can be repurposed.”
Hence, the ultimate mission for Sootable is to bring upcycling awareness of the most overlooked waste to the public. The team is now developing their first prototype and would welcome students and researchers to join their team to create this impact together. 【#科大創業家】恭喜！香港科技大學初創團隊 Sootable 剛剛獲得氣候行動嘉許計劃2021/22中的「氣候行動構思大獎」。
據《衛報》報導，煤煙（另稱「黑碳」），是氣候變化的第二重要人為溫室空氣污染物。香港對常見的溫室氣體，例如：二氧化碳、二氧化氮、二氧化硫和揮發性有機化合物等，制定了許多措施和政策，但煤煙一直被所忽視和掉棄。有見及此，Sootable正在提供一個顛覆性的「轉廢為能」解決方案，以應對與可持續發展項目相關的氣候變化問題，以及更重要的是為帶領香港實現「碳中和」目標作出深遠的貢獻。 Sootable的創始人希望通過認真正視煤煙問題，他們可以將柴油車主納入綠色運動並生產可持續燃料，而相比起傳統方法採集，天然氣等燃料將於50年內耗盡。
「Sootable希望社會各界人士都可以身體力行去改善環境。此外，探索更多種可以重新利用的廢料。」
因此，Sootable的最終使命是向公眾傳遞最易被忽視的廢料回收意識。
